RECOUNT ESSAY : My Most Embarrassing Memory

Everyone has been embarrassed at one time or another. It is that moment in time when you wish _________________________. The anxiety and discomfort felt during that time which may only last a few seconds feels like time has stood still.

I remember so well when I had my most embarrassing moment. I was in Form 4 and it was during the school recess hour. The minute the bell rang for recess, I rushed to the toilet because___________________________________. I didn’t want to miss class because the lesson taught that morning was to include tips for the forthcoming examination.

Without realising, I had rushed to the girls’ toilet. The prolonged control and an upset stomach made worse by two glasses of cold milk in the morning made me grunt and groan in what I thought was the privacy of the male cubicle. I thought I heard giggling outside and wondered why the giggles sounded unusually near. A few minutes later I came out the cubicle and discovered to my horror that I had __________________. To make matters worse, the few girls standing outside didn’t even turn away when I came out. Instead they looked down at me, and only then turned their heads in the opposite direction. Horror of horrors, I had forgotten________________! No beetroot could have matched the colour of my face at this point in time!

The news of my predicament spread _______________ throughout school. I was truly the talk ______________. I felt like I could either walk around feeling perpetually self-conscious and embarrassed or I could turn the situation round, perhaps even to my advantage. I remembered my mother’s words that _______________________. So I decided to make fun of myself. Everyone got bored after a while and nobody teased me after that.

It was indeed an eye-opening experience for me. I have learnt that when people laugh at you, _________________________. You must not take yourself seriously. Learn to look at yourself through _____________________ and you will realise that most of the time when they laugh at you, they just want to have some fun. They mean no harm. So smile, while you still have teeth!

It was a dark and stormy night. The wind was howling. Like any other weekend, I was on the way to my tuition class. I had to take the city bus to the destination. As I walked down the street from my house, I noticed that the road was exceptionally quiet. A shiver ran down my spine. I kept my cool as I walked toward the bus stop. My thoughts were far away as I was thinking about the mid term exam that was just around the corner.

During the long and dull wait for the bus, I thought I heard the sound of a motorbike approaching. My heart pounded furiously in my chest. I turned around to scan my surroundings. Silence. There was nothing but the rustling of dry leaves on roadside. Deciding that my mind was probably playing tricks on me, I ignored the sense of foreboding and continued playing the addictive game of candy crush on my handphone. In a few seconds, I froze. My grip tightened on the bag I was carrying as I realized that the soft purring of the motorbike engine about 10 meters behind me was real. I wasn't imagining it, and nearer and nearer it came.

Before I could properly take what was happening, the motorbike pulled up in front of me. In a flash, a helmet clad rider reached out and roughly yanked at the strap of my bag which I had carelessly left on the space beside me. I tried to grasp on to a loose buckle and found myself lurching forward from the force of the motorbike which had now started moving again. As I desperately clung on to my belongings, my body was dragged along the tarred road. Through this whirlwind of movement, I was acutely aware of the skin detaching from my kneecaps as they scraped the gravel. Finally, there was a sharp blow to my shoulder as the pillion rider delivered a punch to the joint in order to shake me off. In the blink of an eye, I found myself sprawled some 50 meters away from the bus stop writhing in pain from the dislocated shoulder bone, a broken nose and the aforementioned leg injuries. As the motorbike rode off into the darkness, I never felt more alone in my life. My strained and ragged breath pierced the otherwise silent and still night air as the stars witnessed my body slowly losing consciousness.

I awoke to the steady rhythmic beep of the monitor by my hospital bed. I blinked from the harsh white lights above me and noticed my family members standing around staring anxiously down at me. In addition to the fractured nose and dislocated shoulder joint, I learned that I sustained injuries to both my ankles, knees and, according to the doctor, was extremely fortunate to be alive. That fateful night, a taxi had passed by the normally deserted area and the driver noticed my limp and groggy body on the roadside. Dependent on the kindness of this stranger, I was brought to the nearest hospital and was given emergency treatment.

My parents encouraged me to lodge a police report. To prevent the same ordeal from happening to other people, I agreed though I was badly shaken up. I was interrogated by a police officer  in the hospital. I gave him a rough description of the assailants. Apparently, I was not the only victim that night, and three other reports had been made the same day. He promised me that they would do their best to apprehend the wanted men. After this dreadful experience, I learned that we should be extra vigilant when out alone and be weary of anyone approaching. I was so thankful that I was saved miraculously and it was all over finally

RECOUNT - A ROBBERY NEXT DOOR

QUESTION: You stayed up to study for your examination and when you were going to sleep, you heard
some noise from your neighbour’s house. You looked out and you saw a mysterious guy
trying to break into your neighbour’s house. Write a recount about the whole incident.

When writing your recount:
• write about one thing that you have learnt from the incident.
• add any other relevant information
• write in not less than 150 words

It was 11 pm on Tuesday night. I was burning the midnight oil for my science test the next day. The whole house was quiet and everyone had hit the sack. As my eyes were getting heavy, I decided to pack up my things and call it a night. As I was crawling under the sheets, I heard a soft crash.

Thinking it was my imagination I tried to go to sleep. Suddenly there was a loud THUD of something heavy hitting the floor. Convinced I wasn’t dreaming, I peered out my window, as the sound seemed to emanate from my neighbour’s unit next door.

I was shocked to see a figure in black tip-toeing stealthily along the side of the house. He seemed very tall and in his hand he held a long machete! I noticed the glass window had been broken and a big bag of tools lay under it. The man crawled into the house without making a sound. My blood ran cold.

Realising that a robbery was in progress, I rushed to my parents’ room and jerked them awake. After hastily explaining the situation, my father rang up the police, while my mother tried ringing the neighbours to alert them.

Within ten minutes, I noted with relief the sirens in the distance. There was still no sign of the thief. I wondered if my neighbours were awake. The police arrived and cornered the house. My neighbour, Mr. Ramli ran out with his wife and kids. By a stroke of luck, they had managed to lock the robber up in one of the rooms.

Soon the police handcuffed and hauled out a very disgruntled criminal and put him in the police car. My parents explained how I had alerted them about the noise. The police praised me for my quick thinking and bravery. I felt relieved that no one got hurt in the process, and the thief got what he deserved. One unforgettable lesson that I learnt is, it never pays to steal. No matter how slick you think you are, justice will always prevail.
