Writing an Introduction

An introduction paragraph is an important part of your entire essay.

• -        It grabs the attention of the reader
• -        It introduces the topic
• -        It informs the reader what your essay is about

We can break up an introduction into 3 parts:

 

1	HOOK!	1.    Rhetoric question   2.    Description   3.    Definition 4.    Powerful statement/ facts   5.    Quote/ expression	RQ: Why is the world so unhealthy? DESC: The huge sweaty man staggered up the stairs and was red in the face as he gasped for air.  DEF: Obesity is abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body STATE: In 2020, Malaysia had the highest rates of diabetes and obesity in South East Asia. QUOTE: A wise man once said “health is wealth”
2	Problem statement + Why does it happen (general sentence)	What is the issue or problem that you notice?	Ø Nowadays,   Ø In this day and age, Ø In recent years,
		Why does the problem happen?	v This is because, people do not care about the problem ... v This happens as a result of ignorance of this matter... v This occurs due to the fact that youngsters are unaware of the methods to control...
3	Introduce your essay.   OR   Summarize your points.	Let the reader know what your essay is about (refer to your question)     Share your points with the reader in the intro	This essay will discuss .. This article will shed some light on…   Nature is important to human beings because of (point 1), (point 2) and (point 3)

 

     Example of an introduction paragraph: 

    Obesity is abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body. In recent years, Malaysia has been staggering under the weight of this epidemic. The root cause of this problem may be that people are ignorant about the seriousness of the issue. This article will discuss the effects of obesity and how to overcome the disease.

The following are some hooks that can be used in your nature essay. Identify what type of hook is being used in each example.

	A famous native American proverb once said, ‘We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.’
	How hot is the earth going to get?   What’s the big deal with nature anyway?
	The dense and vibrant forest is home to hundreds of species of flowers, insects, birds and trees, all living in glorious harmony of the lush green tropical jungle.
	Scientists have predicted that in 2050, earth will suffer flooded cities, and the Amazon will look more like a desert!
	Nature is the physical world collectively including plants, animals, the landscape and products of the earth.
