Writing an Introduction

An introduction paragraph is an important part of your entire essay.

  • -        It grabs the attention of the reader
  • -        It introduces the topic
  • -        It informs the reader what your essay is about

We can break up an introduction into 3 parts:

2.    Description

 


3.    Definition


4.    Powerful statement/ facts

 

5.    Quote/ expression

RQ: Why is the world so unhealthy?

DESC: The huge sweaty man staggered up the stairs and was red in the face as he gasped for air. 

DEF: Obesity is abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body

STATE: In 2020, Malaysia had the highest rates of diabetes and obesity in South East Asia.

QUOTE: A wise man once said “health is wealth”

     Example of an introduction paragraph: 

    Obesity is abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body. In recent years, Malaysia has been staggering under the weight of this epidemic. The root cause of this problem may be that people are ignorant about the seriousness of the issue. This article will discuss the effects of obesity and how to overcome the disease.
